Dirofilaria immitis (pathology) - diethylcarbamazine (DEC) reaction in liver (Giemsa stain) the liver shows evidence of chronic, passive, venous congestion developing a distinctive lobular or nutmeg pattern of the liver due to periacinar fibrosis. The Mast cells associated with the vascular changes resulting from the DEC reaction are not degranulated. (see Sutton RH in Boreham PFL and Atwell RB 1988. Dirofilariasis. CRC Press).
